About Forestry Parts Direct Ltd

Peter Williamson Jnr launched his new business, Forestry Parts Direct (FPD) Ltd just over 16 months ago.

Peter has been a professional harvester operator for many years and understands that harvesting contractors need good quality replacement parts for their machinery ASAP and at the best possible price. The first products Peter stocked came from the Estonian company Balmec, whose product range includes feed rollers, de-limbing knives, roller arms, hydraulic cylinders, crane racks, measuring wheels, and many more parts for companies including John Deere, Ponsse, Komatsu, Waratah, Rottne and Log Max. Balmec have been trading since 2007 and have established a solid reputation for quality and hard-wearing replacement parts with warranty at a reasonable price.

Peter first heard about Balmec when he was trialling their measuring wheels on his John Deere 1470 Harvester for FMM and was so impressed that he approached Balmec about becoming their UK distributor.

Locating premises was the next step, and he found a secure unit near the Creighton in Dumfries which was ideal for his purposes. Balmec offer a no quibble guarantee on all their parts, including a one-year unlimited hours warranty on all their de-limbing knives and a two-year unlimited hours warranty on all their feed rollers.

The Balmec replacement parts were an instant success, and his customers were delighted with the quality, service and price from FPD. Prior to the Brexit chaos, items not in stock could be sent to customers by express delivery from Estonia and delivered to customers within 48 hours.

Peter has since increased his product range so that he can better serve his customer base, and this includes the Iggesund Forest range of products. After trialling the Iggesund Blue Guide Bars for FMM with great success, he met with Iain Lawrence of Iggesund Forest. This resulted in FPD being appointed the UK’s independent distributor for Iggesund Forest’s products. One of the bars he tested had harvested in excess of 7,000m³, with all the others he trialled exceeding the normal life expectancy of a guide bar. Peter also tested the harvester chains on his harvester before committing to them, and was again very pleased with the results, so the chains were added to his product range.

Peter has sourced more products from other good suppliers and can now offer filter and service kits for all makes and models of forestry machines, as well as crane cable for John Deere harvesters, Hultdins bar clamps and saw swings, encoder cable, window wiper blade systems for John Deere E and G series models, and almost all mechanical, electrical and hydraulic parts for John Deere machines. Another popular line which is held in stock is timber marker paint.
Like many businesses sourcing their products from overseas, Brexit was a nightmare to negotiate initially, but Peter’s deliveries are running smoothly and regularly, albeit a little slower due to clearing times at UK customs. He tries to hold all popular items in stock where possible and works hard so that his customers have a good experience and will keep returning. If items are not in stock, Peter can give his customers a delivery date and will keep them up to date on the progress of their order.

As a hands-on and experienced machine operator, Peter is in a position to offer help and advice over the phone to his customers so that they can be reassured that the part they order is the part that is needed to get them up and running. He is looking to progress to having a well-stocked retail outlet close to the A74M where customers have the option of calling in to collect the parts they need off the shelf.
