Power giant Drax announces 350 job cuts in UK and US in major restructuring
Drax Group, a prominent power company, has announced a significant restructuring initiative that will result in the elimination of 350 positions as the organization shifts its strategic focus towards flexible energy generation and storage solutions. As a member of the FTSE 250, Drax operates the largest power station in the United Kingdom, located in North Yorkshire. The company has stated that this restructuring effort is integral to its plans for establishing “a strong, resilient business for the future.” The Drax power station is responsible for generating approximately 5% of the nation’s electricity, predominantly utilising sustainable biomass sources.

The company has initiated a consultation process with affected employees in both Yorkshire and North America, as indicated in statements issued by the organisation. This restructuring effort follows recent strategic announcements, which include plans to establish a data center at the Yorkshire location and the acquisition of battery energy storage projects valued at over £157 million..
Drax has announced that it is now focused on driving growth in its flexible generation business and exploring new opportunities beyond 2031. The company recently signed a low-carbon dispatchable Contract for Difference (CfD) agreement, which acknowledges the significant role that the power station will continue to play in ensuring UK energy security throughout the 2030s. This strategic shift also involves advancing future applications of sustainable biomass and repurposing existing infrastructure.
At the end of last year, Drax revealed plans to establish a data center at its North Yorkshire facility, located between Selby and Goole. The center could become operational as early as 2027. Drax has indicated that it plans to invest up to £2 billion in additional projects, primarily focusing on flexible and renewable energy initiatives.
Drax is undergoing a restructuring following its £157.2 million deal to acquire three battery energy storage system (BESS) projects. These sites are located in Marfleet, Hull; Neilston in East Renfrewshire, Scotland; and East Kilbride in Lanarkshire, Scotland. This acquisition marks a significant expansion into energy storage technology, which is essential for balancing renewable energy supply.
Moreover, the investments in battery storage align with Drax’s broader strategy to support the energy transition while ensuring grid stability. As the UK shifts away from fossil fuels towards more intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar power, energy storage systems are becoming increasingly vital.
Union representatives from GMB have strongly criticized the announcement of redundancies, accusing Drax of betraying its workforce. Deanne Ferguson, a senior organizer at GMB, stated that the company cannot build a low-carbon future by making skilled energy workers redundant. She pointed out that Drax has received substantial public subsidies while “betraying the workforce and the communities that have supported it.”
In response, Drax emphasized that the restructuring does not reflect on the professionalism and commitment of its employees. The company has assured that it will support affected colleagues during the consultation process and will work closely with unions and elected employee representatives throughout the implementation. Officials highlighted that these changes are crucial for long-term success and a continued commitment to ensuring UK energy security.
In contrast to the job reductions, Drax emphasizes that advancing the future uses of sustainable biomass is a core part of its strategy. The biomass operations at the Yorkshire power station will continue to play a significant role, although the company is adjusting its organizational structure to adapt to changing market conditions. This strategy reflects broader industry trends toward diversification and flexible energy generation.
However, questions remain about the timeline for implementing the restructuring and which specific departments will be most affected by the redundancies. The consultation process with impacted staff is ongoing, and company officials have not yet confirmed final decisions regarding the organizational changes.
