About Forest Machine Magazine
Forest Machine Magazine is run by husband and wife team Rab and Wendy Easton.
Six years ago Rab went home from work with the bright idea of starting a forestry magazine, much to his astonishment, Wendy actually thought it might be one of his better ideas. “As an operator, I felt there were no publications aimed directly at the equipment that is used in forestry and any that were out there were written by people with no real understanding of our industry.“
After a lot of consideration the couple decided to take the plunge and booked a stall at the 2016 APF exhibition. This was a big step for both as Rab had a well paid job as a forwarder operator and Wendy was the manager of a local Garden Centre. To say they were apprehensive when they gave notice to their employers was an understatement. Rab’s thinking was that as he was pushing 60, publishing the magazine would allow him to slow down a bit and have more time for himself. After all writing a few stories and visiting people and places for features couldn’t be that demanding could it?
They found the magazine launch at the APF terrifying, luckily though it was well received and the magazine gained a tremendous amount of subscribers over the three day show. They came away with a sense of relief and knew that we would be in business for at least twelve months.
Five years on and every day is still a school day. Rab feels privileged to be doing what he enjoys. Although he still misses operating equipment in the forest, on the occasions when he has the opportunity to operate a forwarder for a load or two it certainly quells that! Although the working hours are more flexible, they have increased as the couple constantly go from one deadline to another. Weekends have become an extension of the working week and all plans of slowing down and relaxing have well and truly disappeared.
“It has been an exciting journey watching the evolution of sophisticated forestry and timber haulage equipment and witnessing the improvements in safety features for protecting workers and thanks to subscribers and advertisers supporting us we can continue this fascinating journey,” said Rab.
