Volkswagen offers the new Transporter as a van, van Plus (luggage compartment in the second row of seats for combined goods and passenger transport), Kombi (for passenger transport) and double cab version (pallet frame with long wheelbase). Combi and van versions are available as an option with a high roof and an extended wheelbase. The nine-seater Caravelle will continue as a model for commercial passenger traffic.

Volkswagen announces that it will significantly expand its range of powertrain systems with the new Transporter and Caravelle versions. In addition to the latest turbodiesel engines (TDI), both models are available with both plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrains. The pre-sale phase is already underway in Europe with three different TDI engine power options: 81 kW (110 hp), 110 kW (150 hp) and 125 kW (170 hp). A fresh plug-in hybrid engine (eHybrid) with a system power of 171 kW (232 hp) is also already available to order. Three electric options will soon follow: 100 kW (136 hp), 160 kW (218 hp) and 210 kW (286 hp) with 64 kWh net battery capacity. In addition, there will be an electric version for urban transport with less power and a smaller battery. The TDI and eHybrid models have front-wheel drive. The 4MOTION all-wheel drive system is available as an option for TDI versions from 110 kW. All-electric models initially have rear-wheel drive; An all-wheel drive version will be available later.

The 125 kW TDI is equipped as standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which is also available at an additional cost in conjunction with the 110 kW TDI. Automatic transmission is standard on plug-in hybrid and electric models.

The seventh generation of the Transporter no longer starts just with a key, but from the start button next to the 12-inch digital instrument cluster and 13-inch infotainment screen. The standard multifunction steering wheel is equipped with clearly positioned buttons. The volume of the infotainment system is adjusted using the steering wheel or traditional rotary knob. The handbrake lever has been replaced by a switch on the electric parking brake, which is located in the center of the dashboard. Also new: space-saving steering column selection lever in automatic versions. It allows even better access to the luggage compartment or cabin. Large cup holders on the forward-moving centre console (depending on equipment), as well as additional cup holders and practical storage compartments at the top of the dashboard make everyday life easier.

The maximum width between the wheel arches has been increased by 148 mm to 1,392 mm. As a result, Euro pallets are now better suited for travel. The length of the luggage compartment in the floor with a standard wheelbase in the Transporter is 2,602 mm – this corresponds to an additional length of 61 mm; With an extended wheelbase, the length of the luggage compartment increases to 3002 mm. Thanks to the increased length, width and wheelbase, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has been able to significantly increase the load capacity of the new Transporter. The maximum storage volume of versions with a standard wheelbase is now 5.8 m3. Versions with a long wheelbase and high roof can accommodate up to 9.0 m3. Depending on the market, the Transporter can be equipped with up to six seats in the passenger compartment and various partitions.

With a ceiling height of less than 2.0 metres and a turning circle of 11.8 metres (normal wheelbase), the Porter is suitable for parking garages and bends effortlessly even in tight spaces.

The maximum payload is 1.33 tons. And if that’s not enough, the new generation of Transporter can tow trailers weighing up to 2.8 tons, depending on the version (previous: up to 2.5 tons).

Volkswagen has expanded the standard equipment package of its new Transporter models compared to its predecessors. Going forward, standard equipment includes: LED headlights, LED taillight groups, electronic parking brake with Auto Hold, 12-inch digital instruments (Digital Cockpit), infotainment system (including DAB+, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, network services and 13″ touchscreen), multifunction steering wheel, keyless start system, rain sensor, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking and dynamic traffic sign display. In addition, a partition wall will be standard equipment in the future. The Kombi with rear windows is characterized by three individual seats in the second row of seats and an audio system with six speakers instead of four.

Electrical appliances are supplied through various interfaces, including USB-A, USB-C and 12 V connections. Sockets for 230 V devices are available as an option. In diesel models, the 230V plug is always located on the driver’s seat body. The electric Transporter also optionally comes with two additional sockets around the D-pillars. The total power of the 230 V system is up to 2300 watts. This means that there is a suitable power supply for every electrical device, from laptops to circular saws.
