Replacing the MS 362 and the MS 400, the new saw sets completely new standards in the 60cc class. Developed from the ground up by STIHL experts with a focus on improving handling and reducing weight, while maintaining an industry-leading performance.
With this, Paul Hicks, Marketing & Product Manager at STIHL, discusses what the future of professional chainsaws should look like, noting the MS 400.1 new developments and key improvements.
What features should professionals look for?
Unrivalled power-to-weight ratio
Looking for chainsaws with impressive power-to-weight ratios is a must for forestry professionals and arborists. Good ratios help reduce operator fatigue, which improves productivity.
Offering an unrivalled power-to-weight ratio is the MS 400.1, with the best ratio of any petrol chainsaw available. Weighing 300g less than the original MS 400, at just 5.5kg, it also offers a smaller engine displacement of 62.6cc.
Despite being lightweight, the tool maintains an impressive power output of 3.9kW. So even without a magnesium piston and with no fuel injection, the MS 400.1’s engine still achieves a market-leading power-to-weight offering.
Excellent torque
Both excellent torque and power are required in a quality professional chainsaw. Combined with optimum power and rapid acceleration, a high torque will ensure easy cutting of larger diameter timber. With torque also comes less pressure sensitivity, which prevents bogging. Again, making for an efficient tool that helps professionals remain productive on-site.
With 4.3Nm of torque, more than the previous MS 400 (4.1Nm), despite its smaller engine displacement compared to other STIHL models, a smoother experience is guaranteed with the MS 400.1. This is great for professionals who are keen to work fast, whilst maintaining precision.
In addition, like all STIHL professional petrol chainsaws, the MS 400.1 uses the most up-to-date M-Tronic technology. This ensures super-fast acceleration, easy starting, and a consistent, reliable performance.
Comfortable handling
Overlooking comfort isn’t recommended when it comes to choosing professional tools. Prioritising a compact design, low weight, good balance and weight distribution will improve productivity levels, given that this combination makes for easy handling over long periods. As such, these factors were central in the development of the new MS 400.1.
Offering ultimate comfort in the 60cc class, the geometry of the MS 400.1’s rear handle has been enhanced, and its end profile has been widened to rest securely on the operator’s leg for plunge cuts. Also, with its compact design and optimised weight and balance, the MS 400.1 can be handled with ease over long periods.
Reliable cooling
Preventing the overheating of machinery is essential for longevity, ensuring that stress on the chainsaw’s piston is reduced.
STIHL’s new MS 400.1 has a larger magnesium flywheel and a re-designed muffler for better cooling, supporting a long working life.
Simple maintenance
Not only does simple maintenance save the user’s time, which can be spent on more valuable tasks, but it also minimises the tool’s downtime. Therefore, a chainsaw should be able to withstand tough, arduous conditions and be easy to clean and maintain when the job’s done.
With this, professionals are advised to look for tools, such
as the MS 400.1, that offer longer working times between maintenance, can be cleaned quickly, and allow easy access to components.
For easy maintenance and operation, the MS 400.1 boasts a large HD2 filter, in addition to an optimised rib pattern on its underside, which also prevents debris buildup while supporting easy cleaning.
In this new chainsaw design, STIHL has also improved access to the oil pump control bolt, meaning adjustments can be made with a standard combi tool, rather than with a specialist screwdriver. At-a-glance fuel monitoring is also granted with the MS 400.1, with a 50% fuel level marker, so filling up can be planned accordingly.
With new technology comes overwhelming choice. However, it’s crucial that forestry professionals and arborists look for chainsaws that keep them productive and efficient, which means purchasing tools that offer good weight, durability, reliability, and excellent performance – always.

The STIHL MS 400.1 combines years of technical expertise and modern advancements to provide the essentials for professionals. Built from the ground up, with innovations at the cutting-edge of power tool development, the MS 400.1 offers overall productivity and efficiency, with an unprecedented power-to-weight ratio, alongside increased torque, improved cooling, and a wide range of ergonomic enhancements.
