Forest Machinery Taster Days

Experience operating a timber forwarder – Jan/Feb 2023. Closing date for applications 9th December 2022.

Confor is hosting a series of events to give you the opportunity to experience operating a timber forwarder. These machines are usually difficult to gain access to but we have set up a two-stage programme to give you an amazing insight into how they operate.

The forest industry is in need of new operators to continue the flow of essential timber into the processing sector. Here it is turned into thousands of products locking up the carbon stored in the timber for years.

As with any supply chain it is highly important that the real material is readily available and as machinery operators you would be at the cutting edge.

The events are funded by Scottish Forestry to promote forestry careers and the high level of skills required to operate in the industry.

Stage 1 is based on a purpose built simulator. This will have the same controls as the real machine and is used as a training aid by the forestry colleges. There will be an experienced operator on hand to guide you through the controls and ensure you get the best out of the machine. Throughout the course of the day you will be assessed and could be offered the opportunity to undertake a further experience on a real machine on a operational site at stage 2.

Stage 2 is spent in the forest on the machine. You and another delegate will be at the controls for the day with a tutor supervising you at all times. The site will be live, so you will see harvesters, forwarders and hauliers in action.

These events are open to anyone over the age of 18 and holds a full UK driving licence. Experience of machinery operation would be advantageous but not essential.
