T-MAR Industries Ltd. has dedicated the past five years to the development of the 7280E Hybrid Electric Drive Yarder, which operates using electric drives that transfer power in a manner similar to that of hybrid vehicles.
Tyson Lambert, Vice President of T-MAR, stated, “The machine does not feature a conventional mechanical powertrain – including the engine, transmission, gears, clutches, and brakes – thereby enhancing fuel efficiency, augmenting power, and simplifying operation and maintenance.” The winch is equipped with five motors that collectively generate 2,900 horsepower; however, the anticipated energy consumption is expected to be significantly lower than that of a traditionally powered machine.
The utilisation of logging yarders has been a longstanding practice dating back to the 1920s. Within the forestry sector, these machines are considered essential due to their capacity to efficiently lift logs from the challenging terrains of British Columbia.
In contemporary practice, Lambert emphasised the importance of operational efficiency and ease of access. As the industry faces a generational transition, it is paramount to educate newcomers, ensuring that the machinery is straightforward to maintain and operate.
T-MAR’s hybrid-electric logging yarder has garnered international interest, with industry professionals from the United States, New Zealand, Germany, and Chile travelling to Campbell River to evaluate the machine. Lambert noted that there is substantial interest in incorporating similar equipment into their forestry operations. The machine is scheduled for deployment at its inaugural logging operation, and industry stakeholders will closely monitor its performance.it performs
