Run faster. Measure more precisely. Maximize the value of every tree.
SP Maskiner FDM (Floating Diameter Measurement) is a technological breakthrough that sets a new standard for diameter measurement in forestry. The patented FDM solution delivers the same high measurement accuracy regardless of feed speed, allowing you to work both faster and more gently—without compromising results.

With FDM, you no longer need to press the stem against the chassis to achieve reliable diameter measurement. You can operate continuously with low pressure on the delimbing knives and feed rollers, enabling high feed speed, lower fuel consumption, reduced stem damage, and increased timber value.
Technology that makes the difference – this is how it works
The patented technology combines SP’s proprietary software with a new FDM sensor, placed in the movable top knife that now serves as the zero point for diameter measurement. The zero point is that way relocated, from the frame to the movable top knife, where it continuously follows the position of the stem. Together with the sensors in the delimbing knives, the new FDM-sensor sends measurement data to the software, where it is processed at lightning speed through advanced algorithms that produce accurate and consistent diameter measurement – every time.
Experience the difference in production and quality
Thanks to the new technology, you never need to press the stem against the frame and you can work with low pressure on the delimbing knives and keep full production at all times. This means you minimize friction against the stem, thereby reducing stem damage and significantly increasing the timber value. This is a solution developed for today’s high production rates and for future demands on efficiency, fuel economy, and resource management.
This gives you:
- High measurement accuracy even at maximum production speed
- Lower fuel consumption thanks to the ability to operate at lower pressure
- Higher productivity due to reduced resistance and the ability to work at lower pressure
- Reduced stem damage, increasing timber value
FDM technology is for those who demand precision
Floating Diameter Measurement is more than an improvement. It represents a new level of measurement accuracy, enabling you to work faster, more gently, and with complete confidence in every measurement value.
