Scotland-based James Jones & Sons Limited (JJSL) has started work on a £21m ($27.7m) expansion project at its timber processing site in Mosstodloch, Moray.
The expansion includes a 4,000m² facility housing two new production lines, boosting output and expanding processing capabilities for the construction, fencing and packaging sectors.
The company, which currently employs about 105 people at its Mosstodloch site, said the expansion is the first phase of a longer-term development plan.
The wider project is expected to create 14 new jobs once fully implemented.
The initial phase has secured up to £315,000 in support from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).
The new lines are designed for more advanced timber processing, including resawing and post pointing, which are expected to improve efficiency and enable the manufacture of higher-value products for the UK market.
HIE funding will help finance the purchase of automated machinery to support the operations.
JJSL Sawmills north of Scotland general manager Robert Mann said: “This initial investment phase is a very exciting step in the continued development of the Mosstodloch site.
“Not only will this bring new capacity to our production, but it will create a more modern and safer working environment and enable us greater flexibility in meeting our customers’ needs with high quality and exceptional service.”
According to the company, the new building will be fitted with biomass heating and will feature energy-efficient machinery.
The facility is also designed to accommodate solar panels in future, measures that are intended to support the firm’s drive towards net-zero carbon emissions.
JJSL is a family-owned business operating 29 sites across the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and employs around 2,100 people. Of its UK sites, nine are in Scotland, including two in Moray.
